Battle Fact File
The town of Battle in East Sussex grew up on the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings in which King Harold was defeated by the Normans under leadership of William, Duke of Normandy.
Battle Abbey marks the actual spot of the battle. The original abbey was built by William as penance for the bloodshed caused during the conquest.
The town became known for its production of gunpowder, with the first gunpowder mill in Battle being built in 1676. Production ceased after a number of disasters including a major one in 1798 when 15 tones of over-dried gunpowder exploded. Other trades took over, including watchmaking in the eighteenth century.
